New Moon in Leo 2024 // Play it Smarter

At 4:13 am Pacific time, we’ll have a New Moon in Leo. It’s a chatty one, thanks to a sextile to Mars and Jupiter in Gemini. We also have Venus still in Leo as well, soaking up a little bit of sunshine before joining Mercury in Virgo later in the evening. And speaking of Mercury, they’ll officially station retrograde a few hours later.

But for many of us, we’ve already been feeling the shadow period, haven’t we? If you’ve been noticing a few technological hiccups and communication snafus, you’re not alone. With Mercury Rx in mind, I wanna try to keep these tarotscopes succinct. “Try” being the operative word though, because as you can see, that sociability aspect from those Leo and Gemini placements is clearly present with the numerous Swords cards at play, as well as numerous court cards. I wanna chat about all the things! (I’m aging myself here, I know.)

If distraction, overstimulation, and brain fog weren’t affecting you before, get ready, because they probably will soon enough. With Saturn in Pisces still closely squaring Jupiter in Gemini, that sense of expansion and play is being checked at every wandering. Get in the habit of writing down your fun ideas so that you can return to them once Mercury stations direct.

In general, I don’t like the fear-mongering that surrounds this transit, so I try not to give “warnings.” However, I do like to gently recommend that this is a period to take stuff off your plate. Everyone else is going through it too and if we’re all putting pressure on ourselves to hustle and be productive and take on every burden… we’re all setting each other up for failure.

So let’s be gentle with ourselves and our expectations, okay?

Especially because, for many of us, we’re going to be faced with what “authority” means to us. Some of us may need to step up and settle into a position of authority [with or towards] ourselves. Or we might find we’re being bossed around a little. Is that something you’re okay with? Are you willing to set up boundaries for the benefit of everyone involved? Are you comfortable saying “no” when you know you need to (even if it’ll lead to temporary discomfort)?

As always, please read for your rising sign should you know it, but feel free to read for your sun, moon, and any other major placement that feels right for you in the moment.

Tarotscopes for the New Moon In Leo 2024

This month’s featured deck is the “Decolonized Tarot” by Cathleen Abalos and Maritess Zurbano.

Aries. Ace of Swords.

What does “pleasure” feel for you? What does “art” feel like for you? When was the last time you had fun? When was the last time you learned or created something for the sake of it? Use this new moon to get back in touch with the concepts of both creation and recreation.

Taurus. Death.

This new moon lights up the sector surrounding your home life. However, before you embark on a new chapter, you’re being asked to make peace with how you’ve defined and understood the concepts of “home” and “family.” A house is not always a home; we must work with others to make it so. How were you brought up and what values were you raised with? What are you going to take with you (both figuratively and literally)?

Gemini. King of Swords.

You can’t keep playing small. You, chatty Gemini, know better than most that what you say matters, so what are you saying to others and to yourself? What are you saying about others and about yourself? Words have power and you can use that wisely if you so choose. Write down what you want for yourself in the months ahead and speak them aloud to both radiate and absorb the intention.

Cancer. King of Wands (Rx).

Remember what I said about overstimulation and distraction earlier? If you’re getting caught up in something new and shiny, you may find yourself spent in multiple senses of the word. Budget your energy and your money on whatever endeavors you have planned this new moon. You can dream big, but you can’t always act on the biggest power play every turn.

Leo. Queen of Wands.

As the saying goes, you can be a work of art and a work in progress at the same time. Allow yourself to shine for exactly who you are right now, in this time and place. The Queen of Wands is your element and she’s here to help you meet yourself where you’re at and nurture whatever ideas you have about who you’ve been and how you’ve been showing up. If you want to make a change, you can do it. She’s got your back.

Virgo. Queen of Cups (Rx).

With Mercury, your planetary ruler, about to station retrograde, it wouldn’t be a surprise if you’re feeling out of sorts. There’s a lot that’s happened in the months leading up to this and now the new moon is happening in your house of the subconscious. So, use this month to recuperate. Aren’t you feeling tired? Give yourself a break and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Let other people guide and assist you.

If you wanna get away and imagine a relaxing place, I’ve just put out a new guided meditation for that very purpose. It’s called “Vacation Elation” and you can listen to that directly on YouTube! It’s best heard with headphones because there are some binaural beats integrated throughout for maximum relaxation.

Libra. Knight of Swords.

If you want to throw one last big shindig before the summer ends, you gotta be the one to do it. Rally your friends for some fun, but remember, if they can’t show up, it’s probably not personal (it’s probably the retrograde). This new moon is a great time to redefine and re-energize what “community” means to you. But you have to be the one to take charge.

Scorpio. 9 of Cups (Rx).

When it comes to what you create, how you’re seen by others, and what you’ll leave behind… how do you feel about that? Do you feel pride? Or are you frustrated? Are you satisfied, dissatisfied, or apathetic? This New Moon in Leo is asking you to pull your perspective back to explore what “legacy” really means to you.

Sagittarius. 8 of Cups.

Seek newness. Exploration is integral to your sign and you have to make sure to honor that regularly. Now is one of those times. However, it’s not merely about moving towards something unknown, you also have to honor the origins of that trajectory. The 8 of Cups suggests both sadness and acceptance… something’s no longer working for you and you know it, even if that knowledge isn’t entirely on the surface. Honor what’s transpired so that you can move towards what will be so much better for you in the future.

Capricorn. 6 of Cups (Rx).

Don’t bury that softer part of yourself. Those inklings of nostalgia shouldn’t be denied, they just want to be integrated. A big part of Leo season is about opening up your heart and the easiest way to do that is by working with your inner child. This could look like incorporating more play into your life, but it could also be as simple as welcoming others’ generosity. Accept those gifts and compliments! You don’t have to do anything to earn them.

Aquarius. 5 of Swords.

This new moon sits in the house opposite of you and begs for a conversation. You may find yourself having major one-on-one discussions [or disagreements] with those closest to you. With that in mind, consider this: when you’re in the throes of an argument and feeling compelled to stand your ground, take a breath and remember why you’re passionate about the issue in the first place. More importantly, ask yourself if being “right” is more important than the relationship or dynamic between you.

Pisces. 10 of Pentacles (Rx).

Everyone defines success differently. What feels fulfilling to one person may not be fulfilling to the next… what’s fulfilling to them may not be fulfilling to you. Be mindful about whether you’ve been working towards someone else’s goals. There’s only so much we can do in a day… every second counts, ya know? Time spent working on the dreams of others takes away from your own.
