Card for the Week of June 3, 2024: Afterlife

It’s the first week of a new month and I invite you to think about who you could be by the end of June. If, like many people, you’ve been feeling fed up with your current situation or goals, this week will allow you to build anew.

There are numerous planets in Gemini right now: the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus all rest in this sign. Defined by curiosity, Gemini is, in many ways, an optimistic sign like the other mutables. Along with the twins, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces naturally rest in transitory spaces and feel the pull towards new things (broadly speaking, Virgo wants to refine, Sagittarius wants to expand, and Pisces wants to meander).

Gemini wants to learn. They want to know new things. Maybe even try stuff out.

So if you’re feeling the tug in a certain direction, what’s stopping you from following through?

For some of us, the answer will be “circumstances” or “resources.” For others, it may simply be, “myself.”

But in response to that… What do you have now that can help you get there?

How similar is the person you are now to the person that you want to be?

(Does anything need to change?)

It should be noted that this card also corresponds to The Fool, which was the card of the month for May! And while the Fool itself is a card about optimism and a willingness to try new things, it also signals a journey. Whatever it is you’re seeking, it’s the start of a process. Which, of course, is a frustrating maxim to hear when you wish you were further along or better at x, y, z than you may be by now…

But remember, you’re just beginning.

The title of the card being “afterlife” gets that idea across. It’s broader. Has a wider scope. It also implies a rebirth of sorts.

I’ve been talking about “ego death” a lot lately. Because the subjective sense of self, while generally stabilizing, can be stagnating too. The person you see yourself as can cloud your judgment and keep you from seeing yourself in another light.

As I mentioned before, Gemini season corresponds with my first house of self, and with Jupiter transiting here for a year, it’s something that’s definitely gonna stay on my mind (and, of course, in my words).

Truthfully, it’s something I’ve been craving while simultaneously being terrified of it. I want to be changed because the work involved in actively changing feels exhausting.

It feels futile.

Because if I was better at becoming better I wouldn’t feel like as much of a failure as I do right now, right?

But again, it’s a process. Gotta stop being so hard on myself.

Same goes for you.

The narratives and characterizations we’ve made of ourselves can hold us back.

So, as they say in writing circles… sometimes you gotta kill your darlings.

Even if one of those darlings is your old self.

(Who will exist in that afterlife?)

The “Afterlife” card is from the “Arcanum Vitae” deck by Studio Artemy. This is one of the featured decks in my new offering “Summer Release Refresh Revive Rendezvous,” which is a four-card spread designed to help you redirect and make the most of your remaining 2024. You can learn more about it and book a reading for yourself here, on the “readings” page of my Ko-Fi.

If you’re not quite ready for a personalized reading, I also have a mini guide and workbook on the overall energy of the year. In the RWS tradition, 2024 corresponds to the Major Arcana card of “Strength,” which can mean so many different things. If you’re the journaling type, check out that guide here, on the “shop” section of my Ko-Fi.
